Hi all! This forum certainly is a great source of info and shared experience.
I just bought a 2002 pacific blue rs. It was a dealer /employee lease, and aquired 3400 km.
I was thinking of switching to synthetic next change, but have been cautioned about doing that prior to a suitable run-in period.
Any ideas are always welcome. Thanks..look forward to pick her up wednsday..cheers
Dave

Congrats on the new bike! Let us know how you like it.

"Conventional wisdom" has been to wait until at least 6k miles, and more desirable 12k to 18k miles before switching to synthetic oil, in order to allow the engine to more fully break in (rotating/sliding parts seated and bedded). "Convential wisdom" also says that oil consumption tapers off as break-in occurs, which is another indicator as to when to switch. I switched to BMW/Spectro synthetic at 18k miles, and for me oil consumption really tapered off around 16k miles. YMMV, literally

Ditto with Doug.
You can on the other hand shift to synthetic oil in the tranny and drivetrain at anytime. You will notice smoother shifts (specially with the 5 speed tranny).

I switched to synthetic at 15K miles.  My oil consumption went down as soon as I switched - coincidence?
