Hello everyone out there. I am a new rider with a 96RS that I purchased 6 months ago. I hear so much about solid mounts versus the rubber mounts. How can I tell if I have rubber or solid mounts. I looked at the mounts they are black and are hard when I touch them. They do not feel like rubber. I also notice that after a few miles on the bike my hands become numb. That is why I think I might have solid mounts. I hope that the mounts are right above the forks and in between. Forgive me if I do not know all the motorcycle mechanical terms. I do work on my cars. Thanks. You guys have the best site.

The stock rubber mounts (mine anyway) have a steel sleeve around them--with the "bushings" inside the sleeve made of rubber. So if you touch/tap the outside you will feel steel. The solid mounts are all-metal (no rubber bushings) and are typically alloy and thus silver in color (although I suppose they could be painted black, but I can't imagine why as they are fairly hidden). The best way to tell is to sit on the bike, grasp the bars at the handgrips like you're riding, and try to move them up and down. If they flex around the mounts then you can bet they are the stock rubber ones. The solid mounts do not flex. Note that even with the rubber mounts there will be some vibration transmitted, which can cause numbness (as can incorrectly positioned bars, etc.). When I switched to solid mounts I noticed a bit more vibration, but not enough to be a problem and I don't really notice it now. Here's what the solid mounts look like in-place (Edited by DougM at 9:17 am on May 22, 2004)
