This is not the typical tire question:  Ok, maybe it is, but bear with me!

I have reviewed every single tire comment here on this site as well as the BMW ST sites, etc.  Tires are not new.  I do have questions though about the warm up of tires...

Currently running Michelin Pilot Roads, 2k miles on them.  I am having warm-up issues.  It truly seems to take a full 10-15 minutes of riding to get the tires up to operating temps.  It is a little disconcerting to roll out of the garage, make two turns as conservatively as possible, and feel both tires slipping an inch or two on the turns.

Now, the R1100RS runs an 18", 160 tire on the rear.  My bike directly previous to this was a ZX11, with 180 spec tires.  I don't recall ever having the slip issue when riding out on the ZX11, whether it was on BT020's or Pilot Roads.

Is it possible that the tire contact patch is "sooooo" much smaller on the 160 tire that the slip is more pronounced?

Obviously, I don't like slipping and sliding around like Rossi on a set of shagged Slicks!

As to current tires, I have seen the following tires available in the 160 size:

Metzler Z-6
Metzler Z-4 (to be discontinued?)
Bridgestone BT020 (known oscillation issues on stock 18" rim...)
Bridgestone BT014 (no life, but should be good stick!)
Michelin Pilot Road
Avon 45/6

I am not hard on tires - I got 10k out of a set of Roads on my ZX11, and that included a lot of twisties work.  I was pacing for 8k on my set of BT020's.

So, long story short, what is the solution to reducing the warm-up times on the tires?  Should I be looking at the 5.5" rim conversion so I can run the 180 spec tires?

Or is this just a case of "getting used" to the the 160 spec cold slippage?
